To conduct Panchayat polls on party or non-party basis Govt’s prerogative: SEC
7/25/2023 10:52:13 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 25: Newly appointed State Election Commissioner of the Union Territory said that it was the prerogative of the government to take a decision on conducting Panchayat elections on a party or non-party basis.
“The last Panchayat elections in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir were held on a non-party basis. There is no reason to change that system”, newly appointed State Election Commissioner B R Sharma said while interacting with a media channel.
Sharma, however, hastened to add that there is a provision for holding Panchayat elections on a party basis. “Decision to conduct Panchayat elections on a party basis or non-party basis has to be taken by the government. Our job is only to conduct polls in time”, he said.
Sharma, who took oath as State Election Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir on July 20, said that Panchayat elections will be held in the months of October-November.
He said that the tenure of most of the Panchayats would be expired by the end of this year so it is obligatory to conduct elections before the expiry of the term of existing Panchayats in J&K.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief secretary B R Sharma on July 20 took oath as the State Election Commissioner of the Union Territory.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha administered the oath of office to BR Sharma at the Raj Bhavan in Srinagar.
BR Sharma was last week appointed the State Election Commissioner. His predecessor K K Sharma completed his term on February 1. BR Sharma will hold the position of SEC till the age of 65.
Jammu region, B R Sharma has served as the chief secretary of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2015 to 2017.
He has also served as Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), as well as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jammu and Kashmir.
