Panchayat Elections | | | State Election Commissioner B R Sharma has announced that Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir would be held in October and November this year and to hold these polls on party or non-party basis is government’s prerogative. In 2018, Panchayat polls in J&K were held on non-party basis but National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party had boycotted these elections. After the empowerment of grass root democratic institutions people have become equal stakeholders in the development and have actively participated in the programmes launched by the government. The Panchayat system is a traditional form of local self-governance that has been prevalent in rural India for centuries. It is an important mechanism for empowering people at the grassroots level and ensuring inclusive development in rural areas. In the context of Jammu and Kashmir these elections hold immense significance. The Panchayat polls will once again provide an opportunity to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to elect their own representatives at the local level. This is a crucial aspect of democracy, as it gives voice and power to the common citizens. The Panchayat system ensures that the decision-making process becomes more participatory and inclusive. Panchayats have provided a platform for the people to express their political aspirations and concerns. This has helped in restoring their faith in the democratic process and promoting communal harmony. By electing their representatives people have a say in local governance. The Panchayats have made the elected representatives answerable to the people who had voted them into power in the last elections. This has ensured that the developmental schemes and welfare programs are implemented efficiently and effectively in the rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Panchayats have also served as a check on corruption and mismanagement, as the elected representatives are directly accountable to their constituents. Moreover, Panchayats have strengthened the bond between the government and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. By actively participating in the democratic process and electing their own representatives, people have got that sense of ownership and belonging towards the state institutions. This has helped in addressing the grievances and concerns of the people and fostering a sense of unity and integration in Jammu and Kashmir. |
