Kashmir based parties at loggerheads, J&K witnessing renewed wave of accusations | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 6: After the Supreme Court started hearing a clutch of petitions against the abrogation of Article 370 last week, J&K is witnessing a renewed wave of accusations and finger-pointing between regional parties. It’s in place to mention here that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently blamed the National Conference for rigging the 1987 assembly elections which it said was the main reason for the outbreak of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. The NC had hit back by saying that PDP compromised with the interests of people for the sake of power. Notably, the 1987 assembly elections that were contested jointly by NC and the Congress Party have been a longstanding bone of contention in J&K’s political landscape. Various parties have traded accusations over the years regarding the alleged manipulation of the polls, which many claim led to the outbreak of terrorism in J&K. The NC and Congress had won those elections with a thumping majority. An observer said, “After the Apex Court has started hearing the petitions filed against the scrapping of Article 370 the political temperature has risen significantly. Kashmir based parties have resurfaced and are trying to discredit their rivals. PDP leaders have been blaming NC for the alleged electoral rigging in 1987 and eroding the democratic fabric in the region and alienating the people from the mainstream political process.” He said, “The NC is accusing the PDP of cherry-picking issues to divert attention from their own shortcomings and failures during their tenure in power.” The observer said, “The NC and PDP should understand that the common people are becoming increasingly disillusioned by the political parties' mudslinging. Instead of indulging in a blame game these parties should acknowledge that they committed mistakes in the past and won’t repeat these in future.” He added, “These parties are trying to score brownie points over each other by indulging in a blame game.” |
