Absence of Manohar Lal, Mankotia spoil Congress joining fanfare
8/7/2023 11:01:15 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 7: Although 20 leaders from Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and Aam Aadmi Party joined Congress today in Delhi, the absence of former minister Dr. Manohar Lal and two-time MLA from Udhampur Balwant Singh Mankotia raised many questions.
Highly placed sources said that Congress high-command was more particular about bringing back Dr. Manohar Lal to the party and also convincing Balwant Singh Mankotia to join the grand old party.
“Backchannel discussions were going on with Dr. Manohar Lal and Balwant Singh Mankotia but things could not take a final shape due to some issues”, a source said and added that those who were involved in holding discussions with these mass-based leaders failed to convince them to join Congress party.
Sources said that Balwant Singh Mankotia, who is feeling humiliated and insulted by the BJP after recent development in Udhampur Municipal Council, was ready to join the Congress party but some leaders sabotaged the whole gameplan.
Sources further said that the national general secretary of BJP Tarun Chug, who is incharge of J&K unit, also gave some assurance of Mankotia.
In December 2022, Ghulam Nabi Azad had expelled three prominent faces from Jammu province namely Tara Chand, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma, and Thakur Balwan Singh from the party.
Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma is a former minister and two-time MLA from the Billawar assembly constituency of the Kathua district.
While Tara Chand and Balwan Singh returned to Congress, Dr. Manohar Lal announced not to join any party. Both Azad and Congress leaders are trying to convince Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma but the former minister has still not opened his cards.
