Jammu, Aug 10: The NSS Unit and Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav Committee of Government Degree College, Pouni, recently organized a tree plantation drive as part of the ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ program and the Panch Pran Pledge initiative. The main aim was to raise awareness about the environment and cultivate a sense of social responsibility among the students. The event was overseen by Prof. Balbir Kumar, the Convener of the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit, under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Udhay Bhanu, the Principal of GDC Pouni. Over 30 NSS volunteers actively participated in the drive. Prof. U S Liza and Dr. Tarseem Kumar, Co-Convener and Member of NSS, respectively, along with the volunteers, planted a variety of saplings within the college premises and shared pictures of the event with college authorities. The volunteers also took a pledge to nurture and ensure the healthy growth of the planted saplings. Following the tree plantation drive, a pledge was taken to reinforce the college’s commitment to the nation and its development, as part of the ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ campaign initiated by the Government of India. The college’s Principal, faculty members, staff, and students unitedly took the oath. The coordination of these events was managed by Dr. Varsha Kapoor, Dr. Tarseem Kumar, and Prof. US Liza.
Dr. Udhay Bhanu, the college’s Principal, expressed his appreciation for the NSS team’s efforts and the students’ dedication to this noble cause. He emphasized the importance of trees for human survival, biodiversity, and environmental well-being. Planting trees not only enhances our surroundings but also contributes to the national goal of increasing forest cover and addressing climate change. Prof. Balbir Kumar, the NSS coordinator, highlighted that the program’s objective is to foster a sense of social responsibility among students and encourage them to serve society impartially. He also mentioned that the NSS unit of the college conducts various activities related to environmental awareness, health and hygiene, education, and community development throughout the year.
Principal Dr. Udhay Bhanu congratulated all the participants for their active involvement in the tree plantation drive and the Panch Pran Pledge. He urged them to continue their service to society and nature, emphasizing the positive impact such initiatives have on both local communities and the environment.
