High-level crucial meeting on pre-paid smart meters today | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 20: Amid protests by opposition parties and some sections of society against the installation of electricity smart meters, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha assured that every step will be taken keeping in view the interest and welfare of the people. Addressing a function at Jammu, the Lieutenant Governor said that a high-level meeting will be held at Srinagar on Monday to discuss the situation that emerged after some people aired their apprehension about pre-paid meters. “Divisional Commissioner Jammu has informed me that some delegations called him regarding peoples’ apprehensions about pre-paid meters”, he said and said that a high level would be held at Srinagar on Monday in this regard. Seeking the cooperation of the people to accelerate developmental activities in J&K, the Lieutenant Governor said that the government has taken a whopping loan worth Rs 20,000 crore from the Centre to provide power to the residents of the Union Territory. On Saturday president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCI), Arun Gupta said that he had raised the issue of inflated bills with the Managing Director of Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited ( PDCL) Shiv Anat Tatyal after the installation of smart meters which have caused distress among the consumers. He also questioned the necessity of replacing digital meters with smart meters. Important to mention here that the government has already decided to to deploy magistrates with the teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (JKPDCL) during the installation of smart electricity meters across the Union Territory. In this regard, the concerned Deputy Commissioners have issued orders to the Tehsildars to provide all support during the installation of smart electricity meters within their respective jurisdictions. This step was taken as all opposition parties across Jammu and Kashmir have announced to oppose the installation of smart meters. Last week local residents blocked a road during a protest in the Eidgah area of Srinagar. The Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) of Ghulam Nabi Azad recently held a protest and warned to give a call to the Jammu bandh against the installation of these meters. The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee has also staged a protest against smart meters, inflated bills, and the proposed pre-paid billing system. |
