KVK imparts training on millets revitalisation | | | Early Times Report REASI, Sept 2: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies of Jammu (SKUAST-J) imparted the training programme on "Revitalisation of millets for nutritional security" here at Kheral village in Reasi distt. of J&K which was enthusiastically attended by a number of women farmers of the area. The programme was organised under the dynamic stewardship of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.BN Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension (DE), Prof.SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. Dr.Banarsi Lal, Sr. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi started the programme with the warm welcome of the participants and briefed the significance of the programme. He said that the millets like pearl millet, foxtail, kodo, barnyard, finger millet, amaranths etc. can be grown in Reasi distt. and farmers can fetch more returns by growing them. He discussed in detail on the International Year of Millets-2023 and said that millets are the super food that can help to tackle the challenges of food security. He further said that millets (Shree Anna) have been a part of Indian agriculture since ages and they are capable of preventing both climatic disorders and ailments associated with the sedentary life. He expressed that millets can act as balanced nutrition, which can be produced easily through natural farming by using less water and other agro-inputs. He stressed on the quality seed production of millets and guided the participants on the production, consumption, nutritional security and climate resilience of millets. He highlighted the health benefits of various types of millets and discussed the ways and means of incorporation of millets in the diet. Dr, Lal said that millets are climate resilient and can be grown under rain fed conditions. He stressed on cluster based approach for the millets cultivation asked the participants to work towards increasing the share of nutri-cereals in the national food baskets. He also said that millet based value-added products can be a good venture to increase the income of farmers. He also guided the participants on the value addition in millets for more returns.
