KVK educates farmers on scientific turmeric cultivation

REASI, Oct 4: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is educating and promoting the scientific turmeric cultivation among the farmers in Reasi distt. of J&K under the dynamic stewardship of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.BN Tripathi and the able guidance Director Extension, Prof.SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi scientists are technically guiding the farmers on the scientific cultivation of turmeric especially in the monkey menace areas. According to Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal farmers of some of pockets the district face serious threats because of monkeys menace as the monkeys damage their crops such as maize, pulses, vegetables, fruits etc. and thus badly affect their farm income. He said that turmeric cultivation has an immense potential in the distt. and has been found as a viable crop which is not affected by the monkeys.
He narrated that the KVK is stressing on the organic cultivation of turmeric so that the farmers can fetch more returns. He said that KVK is guiding the farmers on packaging, branding, labeling and marketing of turmeric.
He stressed on the area expansion and cluster based approach in turmeric production for more net returns. He said that the KVK scientists are stressing on the soil health and are guiding the farmers for the preparation of organic formulations such as Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, Panchgavya, cow urine, fermented butter milk, mulching etc. so as to produce the organic turmeric with the least expenses. He narrated that the farmers are also guided to use Neem Oil, Neem Cake, bio fungicides, manures etc. to produce the safe and organic turmeric. He said that the farmers need to manage the diseases, insect-pests and nutrients in turmeric timely for more production.
He further said that organic practices are helpful to increase the quality of the produce at the minimum cost. According to him organic turmeric has diverse uses and is helpful to improve the health status of human beings by improving the immunity of the body. He narrated that the processing in turmeric can be very handy to increase the income and employment among the farmers. By observing the results of successful turmeric growers, many new farmers are coming forward for the turmeric cultivation.
