ENGLAND, Oct 5: There are those tried and tested ones and then a few new ones who are ready to take the world cricket by storm. On Indian batting belters, it is the willow wielders, who are likely to make a difference in bigger context.
PTI takes a look at the top five batters to watch out for at the mega event starting in India on Thursday.
Shubman Gill = India's newest batting sensation has had an exceptional last 12 months. The 24-year-old is the leading run scorer in the 50 over format this year by a distance.
In 20 ODIs, he has amassed 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 and strike-rate is an impressive 105.03. He has crossed the 50-run mark in half of his innings this year.
The free-scoring batter has quickly cemented his spot at the top of the innings with a lethal combination of grace and power in his stroke play.
Gill knows how to pace his innings, accelerating his innings after settling. His partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma at the top will be vital for the hosts.
Babar Azam = One of the best in the 50-over format at the moment, the Pakistan captain and most prolific run scorer in recent years, sits atop the ICC ODI rankings.
The 28-year-old is blessed with a sound batting technique and fluid footwork movement, which helps him hit the ball in all parts of the ground.
After an underwhelming Asia Cup campaign, Babar has gained momentum ahead of the World Cup by scoring 170 runs in two warm-up games.
Steve Smith = One of the modern day greats, Steve Smith has a penchant of playing match-winning knocks. Indians remember his stylish hundred in the semi-final at Sydney in 2015 World Cup.
Armed with an unorthodox yet effective technique, Smith has impeccable timing.
The 34-year-old is coming off a wrist injury and hasn't played many ODIs, but the former skipper had a good outing in the series against India and the warm-up games.
Devon Conway = The explosive left-hand batter relishes batting at the top and has the ability to shift gears anytime.
His strong technique and understanding of the sub continent conditions will help him navigate the challenges presented by spinners at the World Cup.
Conway has the ability to shift gears anytime. Once he starts scoring it is very difficult for bowlers to stop him. He is equally adept ay anchor the innings.
Ben Stokes = England's 2019 World Cup hero will be playing as a specialist batter this edition. Such is Tokes importance in the games that he was coaxed out of retirement to play this edition. He will be missing the opener against New Zealand though.
Known for his explosive batting style, the left-handed Stokes has time and again stood up in the biggest moments, proving that he is a big-game player.
