Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 5: As part of their lecture series, SSK Youth for Kashmir organized a lecture on “Kashmir mei Bhairav Upasana ki parampara” (The Tradition of Bhairava Worship in Kashmir). The lecture featured an esteemed scholar, writer, and historian, Dr. Shashi Shekhar Toshkhani, as the speaker.
During the lecture, Dr. Toshkhani provided insights into the tradition of Bhairava worship in Kashmir and its significance in the broader context of Indian spirituality. He explained aspects of Kashmir Shaiva Philosophy and discussed the worship of 64 Bhairavas, with a special focus on Swachhand Bhairava as one of the main Bhairavas.
Dr. Toshkhani also shed light on the Bhairav Upasana of the eight Bhairavas responsible for protecting Srinagar City. These Bhairavas were identified as Ananddeshwar Bhairav, Tushakraj Bhairav, Mangleshwar Bhairav, Bhauktehswara Bhairav, Hathkeshwar Bhairav, Veetal Raj Bhairav, Poornaraj Bhairav, and Sheetal Nath Bhairav. He provided insights into the Bhairav Puja rituals during the celebration of Hairat (Shivratri).
The participants found the lecture informative and enlightening, gaining a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage. The organizers appealed to the community and the administration to prioritize the restoration of damaged and encroached-upon sites of these Bhairava Temples in the Kashmir Valley. The program was conducted by Sunny Raina, and Sh. Autar Krishan Trakroo was also present during this online lecture.
