Omar sailing in 2 boats: Wants assembly elections, mourns snatching of J&K’s statehood | Says Raj Bhavan rubbing salt into wounds by celebrating Nagaland State Day | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 2: National Conference vice-president and former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah seems confused, on one hand he seems desperately waiting for assembly elections to be held while on the other he is unhappy over J&K celebrating Union Territory foundation day. Omar wrote on X that the Raj Bhavan was “rubbing salt into the wounds” of the people of J&K by celebrating the Nagaland Statehood day. Pertinently, in accordance with the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’, the Nagaland Statehood Day was celebrated with fervour and enthusiasm at the Raj Bhawan in Jammu on Friday. However, referring to the celebration of the statehood day of another state, Omar wrote on X: “Irony comes to die in J&K. Here we celebrate Nagaland Statehood day in Raj Bhavan, Jammu while celebrating “Union Territory Day” when it comes to J&K. Talk about rubbing salt into the wounds of the people here.” On the other hand Omar addressed a political rally in Poonch on Saturday and stated that delay in assembly elections in J&K has put a question mark on the functioning of Election Commission of India. “ECI cannot escape from the situation while saying that the final call on holding assembly polls in J&K has to be taken by GoI and J&K administration,” he told reporters. "This outlook depicts ECI and BJP are not in a mood to hold elections in J&K. We have been repeatedly asking why elections are not being held in J&K," Omar added. An observer while talking to Early Times said, “Omar is sailing in two boats. On one hand he wants statehood and on other he is keen to see assembly elections taking place in J&K despite it being a Union Territory.” He said, “Former J&K chief minister needs to come clear on what he wants, statehood or elections? Him objecting to the celebrations of foundation days of other states shows that he is unhappy over politicians losing the power to rule.” Pertinently, soon after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and few other Kashmir based parties had announced that they won’t contest the assembly elections till J&K’s statehood is restored. However, with the passage of time, political parties stopped talking about statehood and have been demanding that assembly elections should be held with or without statehood. |
