Nearly 150 experts of Indian Fertility Society (IFS) from different parts of the country attended a national conference on “ART and Reproductive Medicine” in Gulmarg and unanimously agreed upon the fact that infertility in J&K is on rise and immediate steps need to be taken to prevent this problem from snowballing into a “big issue.” “There are only a few reliable infertility and IVF centers available for the treatment in J&K. More centers need to be developed and awareness needs to be created about the fact that infertility is not incurable. It can be cured with proper treatment,” said an expert. Another expert said, “Late marriages are also one of the reasons for infertility. Times have changed and so have the people. But youngsters both boys and girls, first focus on their careers and earnings. For many, getting married is the last priority.” He said, “Moral values are declining. Live-in relationships and abortions have become a new trend. Many things have to be set right if we want to address the issue of infertility.” “Awareness needs to be created about the problems in society. Solutions can be provided by holding educational sessions and public forums. The start of national data collection for practices in J&K is a good idea and it should be implemented,” the expert added. The delegates who attended the conference were of the opinion that besides providing scientific solutions, people should be made aware about the importance of “starting a family at an early age. It would help in inculcating moral values in the society and would prevent youngsters from going astray and following the western culture.” |
