Jammu, Jan 13: Experts are worried as Kashmir Valley and all hilly regions of Jammu province are without snow this year. Almost half of January has passed but there is now a fall in the hilly regions. Snowless Valley has created big worries for the people, particularly farmers, with experts describing the prevailing climate as “grim” for the region that will have a long-term adverse impact on people of Jammu and Kashmir. The experts have also warned of “serious” drinking water and irrigation problem for the people Kashmir, particularly farmers, in the coming summer season as the lack of snowfall is expected to have a negative impact on the recharging of existing glaciers crucial for agricultural purposes, which, in turn, will cause water scarcity in the region for irrigation and drinking purposes. It is not the first time Kashmir has been witnessing winters without snow. What is serious this time is the alarming increase in the minimum temperature in some parts of the Kashmir region. Like other parts of the world, Jammu and Kashmir is also witnessing extreme weather events after repeated intervals with their frequencies increasing consequently. Snowfall deficit in the monsoon months of December and January reflects a changing weather trend in the region”. For the last few years, the J&K has been witnessing windstorms with very high velocity in this region and the season pattern was also disturbed during that period. “We cannot ignore such events because the occurrence of extreme weather events is a clear signal that we are at the threshold of the worst impact of climate change,”, experts warned. |
