Jammu, Feb 19: In a significant stride towards enhancing connectivity and infrastructural development in Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate and dedicate several transformative rail projects on February 20. Among the key projects to be inaugurated is the new rail line spanning between Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan, covering a distance of 48 kilometers with a total investment of Rs 15,863 crore. Additionally, the electrification of the Baramulla-Srinagar-Banihal-Sangaldan section, spanning 185.66 kilometers and valued at Rs 470.23 crore, will also be dedicated to the nation. Of notable significance is the adoption of Ballast Less Track (BLT) technology throughout the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable travel experience for passengers. Moreover, this section encompasses India’s longest transportation tunnel, T-50, measuring 12.77 kilometers, located between Khari and Sumber. These rail projects are poised to revolutionize connectivity, promote environmental sustainability, and catalyze economic growth across the region. The commissioning of the Banihal-Sangaldan section marks a significant milestone in the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project, which aims to establish an all-weather, comfortable, and economically viable transportation network through the challenging terrain of the Pir Panjal Ranges. With 161 kilometers already commissioned out of the total 272-kilometer USBRL Project, the inauguration of the 48-kilometer stretch between Banihal and Sangaldan further advances the project’s progress. This development holds particular importance as it transitions the Valley from diesel-run trains to electric ones, fostering cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions across its 20 stations. The introduction of electric train services in the Kashmir Valley, along with the commencement of operations between Sangaldan and Baramulla (at Srinagar), represents a significant leap forward in the region’s connectivity infrastructure. These initiatives are poised to usher in a new era of enhanced mobility, convenience, and economic development, benefiting residents and visitors alike. |
