Lal Singh dubs Azad as BJP agent, challenges DPAP chief to contest on Udhampur seat | Lok Sabha Polls | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 24: In his statement after the announcement of his candidature as Congress candidate, Choudhary Lal Singh minced no words in exposing the chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) Ghulam Nabi Azad. Choudhary Lal Singh dubbed Azad a “BJP agent” who has fielded G M Saroori as a candidate for Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat to cut non-BJP voters to ensure victory of the ruling party. Immediately following the announcement of his candidacy for the esteemed Udhampur-Doda-Kathua Lok Sabha seat, Lal Singh threw down the gauntlet to veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, challenging him to enter the electoral fray from his own constituency. Udhampur-Doda-Kathua Lok Sabha seat is the home constituency of Azad, who floated his own party following his departure from Congress in 2022. Azad, a political stalwart with a 50-year history in Congress, severed ties with the party on August 26, 2022, citing its "comprehensive destruction." Singh questioned Azad’s reluctance to contest from his native constituency, accusing him of fielding a candidate solely to aid the BJP. He alleged that Azad's strategy aimed not at winning but at fragmenting anti-BJP votes, thereby benefiting the saffron party. Singh expressed confidence in voters' ability to respond decisively to those covertly supporting the BJP. Singh criticized Azad’s decision to nominate Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, suggesting it was a ploy to splinter opposition votes. He pondered Azad's motives, particularly given the distance other senior leaders have put between themselves and Azad. Instead of entering the electoral battle in his own stronghold, Azad opted to nominate former minister Ghulam Mohammad Saroori for the Udhampur-Doda-Kathua Lok Sabha seat. BJP's Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh is also vying for a third consecutive victory on this seat. In response, Lal Singh recalled Azad's previous candidacy in 2014, where he lost to Dr. Jitendra Singh by a significant margin. Singh highlighted his own electoral successes in 2004 and 2009, indicating his discontent with being sidelined by Congress in 2014, which led to his defection to BJP. The political landscape in Udhampur-Doda-Kathua remains charged as candidates strategize for the upcoming polls, each aiming to sway voters in their favour. |
