The role of the PDP on this seat was also very mysterious and strange especially on the last few days before the polling. Initially, PDP ran an aggressive campaign on this seat, but later the party leaders were seen clarifying that they were not supporting Engineer Rashid. There was an anti-PDP wave in the Kashmir Valley in the 2019 Lok Sabha, but despite that wave, the then-PDP candidate Abdul Qayoom Wani had secured more than 53,000 votes. Meanwhile, the bumper polling in Handwara and Langate assembly constituencies of Baramulla Lok Sabha has raised concerns The inactiveness of the PDP on the last two days of the polling on the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat has added to the worries of Omar Abdullah. In 2014, the PDP won this parliamentary seat, when party veteran Muzaffar Hussain Baig defeated the then Lok Sabha MP Sharif-ud-Din Shariq of National Conference. The bumper polling in Handwara and Langate assembly constituencies has raised concerns for the NC leadership, as Omar is the party's candidate from this seat. for the National Conference leadership, as former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is the party's candidate from this seat. Handwara assembly constituency is the hometown of People's Conference chief Sajjad Gani Lone and Langate is the assembly constituency of Engineer Rashid, who has won two consecutive elections from this seat. Handwara assembly constituency recorded 72 per cent polling, which is the highest among all the 18 assembly constituencies of Baramulla Lok Sabha seat. After Baramulla, Langate is another assembly constituency where more than 66 per cent polling was recorded. Though publicly the National Conference leadership is putting up a brave front and claiming that Omar Abdullah will emerge victorious, privately many party leaders admitted that the contest is very tough. On the condition of anonymity, some National Conference leaders admitted that Engineer Rashid's entry into the electoral battle had spoiled the game, otherwise, the contest would have been between Omar Abdullah and Sajjad Gani Lone. Apart from this, two days before the voting, Ghulam Nabi Azad's Democratic Progressive Azad Party also announced its support to Engineer Rashid. Ghulam Nabi Azad's decision to support Engineer Rashid surprised many people, but it boosted the morale of Engineer Rashid's supporters. Democratic Progressive Azad Party's senior leader Taj Mohiuddin has a strong base in Uri assembly constituency and he may have transferred his votes in favor of Engineer Rashid. |
