BJP retains 2 Jammu seats; Omar loses Bla to Er Rashid, Mian Altaf defeats Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 4: First time in the electoral history of Jammu and Kashmir two former chief ministers lost Lok Sabha elections with huge margins. While the jailed leader Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid emerged as a giant killer by defeating former chief minister and National Conference candidate Omar Abdullah by a huge margin of 204142, veteran Gujjar leader Mian Altaf defeated Peoples’ Democratic Party chief Mehooba Mufti by a huge margin of 2,81,794 votes which is highest victory margin in Jammu and Kashmir. On two Lok Sabha seats of Jammu province, Jugal Kishore Sharma of BJP scripted a new chapter by making a hat-trick on the Jammu-Reasi Lok Sabha seat. Jugal Kishore Sharma is the first leader who won the Jammu Parliamentary seat in three successive elections. Sharma defeated Congress candidate Raman Bhalla by a margin of 1,35,498 votes. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh won elections on the Udhampur-Doda seat on three successive terms but veteran leader Dr. Karan Singh had earlier won three successive elections on this seat. Dr. Jitendra Singh defeated Congress candidate Choudhary Lal Singh by a margin of 124373 votes. Dr Singh secured 571076 votes while his rival Choudhary Lal Singh got 446703 votes. First time in the political history of Jammu and Kashmir two former Chief Ministers were defeated in the Lok Sabha elections. While Omar was defeated by former MLA and Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid by a margin of nearly two lakh votes in Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, Mufti was far behind Gujjar leader and National Conference (NC) candidate Mian Altaf Ahmad on Anatnag-Rajouri seat. In the run-up to the assembly elections, which are expected to take place before September 30 this year, the recent defeats have cast doubt on the participation of former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. Both leaders have been saying that they won’t contest assembly elections till Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory. Jammu-Reasi seat: Jugal Kishore secured 687588 and won by 135498 votes. His near rival Raman Bhalla of Congress got 520090 votes. Udhampur-Doda seat: BJP candidate and Union Minister secured 571076 and won the seat by 124373 votes. Choudhary Lal Singh of Congress got 4,46.703 votes. Anantnag-Rajouri seat: National Conference candidate Main Altaf secured 521836 votes and won the seat by a margin of 281794 highest in J&K. Srinagar Lok Sabha seat: Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi of the National Conference won the election by 188416 votes. He secured 356866 votes. His near rival Wahid Parra of PDP secured 168450 votes. Baramulla Lok Sabha seat: Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid won this seat by a margin of 204142. He secured 4724812 votes. His nearly rival and former chief minister Omar Abdullah secured 268339 votes. has taken a more hardline approach, vowing not to participate until Article 370 is restored. For her, it’s an emotional issue, given that she previously took an oath as a member of the Assembly under both the J&K Constitution and the Constitution of India, with dual flags. Omar Abdullah’s recent electoral defeat marks his first drubbing in 22 years, while 65-year-old Mufti has now faced back-to-back losses, having also been unsuccessful in the Lok Sabha polls of 2019 and 1999. Another notable outcome was the defeat of PDP youth president Waheed Para, who is currently facing terror charges. Para lost to influential Shia leader Aga Ruhullah in the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat. Meanwhile sitting Lok Sabha member from Jammu-Poonch seat and BJP leader Jugal Kishore Sharma created a hit-track by winning this Parliamentary seat on the third successive term. A former president of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, Jugal Kishore Sharma has never lost any election. He first contested the assembly elections in the year 2002. He was the only BJP leader who won the assembly elections in the year 2002 from the Nagrota assembly constituency. Later in the year 2008, he again won the assembly election for this seat. In 2014, Jugal Kishore Sharma first time contested the Lok Sabha election and emerged victorious. In 2019, the Jammu-Reasi parliamentary constituency was earlier called as Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat. This seat had 2047302 electors in 2019 out of which 14,78,795 votes were polled. Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Jugal Kishore won and became a Lok Sabha member from this seat by securing a total of 8,58, 066 votes. Indian National Congress candidate Raman Bhalla stood second with a total of 5, 55,191 votes. Bhalla lost by 302875 votes. In 2014, the Jammu parliamentary constituency had a total of 18,48,155 electors. A total of 12,53,593 votes were polled. Out of these 12,53,593 votes, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Jugal Kishore secured 6,19,995 votes and became MP from this seat. Indian National Congress candidate Madan Lal Sharma stood second with a total of 362715 votes. He lost by 257280 votes. |
