Early Times Report JAMMU, June 5: Dogra Degree College marked World Environment Day 2024 with a series of environmentally focused activities, aimed at enhancing local biodiversity and raising awareness about critical environmental issues. The NCC Unit of Dogra Degree College, in collaboration with the Eco-Warrior Club, spearheaded a plantation drive within the college premises. Under the guidance of Gulshan Sharma, CTO/ANO NCC, and Ravinder Kumar Rao, Assistant Professor of English and NCC Committee Member, the event saw enthusiastic participation from NCC cadets, Eco-Warriors, and the college's teaching and non-teaching staff. Over 50 saplings of local tree species were planted, including Melia indica (Dhrenk), Terminalia Bellirica (Bedha), Terminalia Arjuna (Arjun Tree), Syzygium Cumini (Jamun), Dalbergia Sissoo (Shisham), Delonix Regia (Gulmohar), Cassia Fistula (Amaltas), Moringa Oleifera (Sehjan), Bauhinia Purpurea (Kachnar), Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla), Tectona Grandis (Teak), Toona Ciliata (Tunu), Mangifera Indica (Mango), Platanus Orientalis (Chinar), Albizia Lebbeck (Sirin), Pinus Roxburghii (Chir), and Morus Alba (Toot). These efforts aimed to conserve local plant species and contribute to the area's greenery. In a parallel initiative, the NSS Unit of Dogra Degree College organized an online quiz competition under the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience." Coordinated by Ms. Simran Thakur, Assistant Professor of History and NSS Unit Member, the quiz attracted over 50 student participants and several faculty members. Conducted on a digital platform, the quiz featured 10 questions addressing the causes and impacts of desertification, methods of land restoration, and strategies to enhance drought resilience. All participants received certificates of appreciation for their engagement and commitment to environmental awareness. The events were graced by Dr. Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary of Dogra Educational Trust, who praised the efforts of the NCC cadets, Eco-Warriors, and NSS volunteers. He emphasized the importance of environmental conservation and lauded the college's initiative to foster a green and sustainable future. Dr. Bela Thakur, Principal of Dogra Degree College, commended the collective efforts of the NCC Unit, NSS Unit, and Eco-Warrior Club. She highlighted the significance of planting trees as a crucial step towards healing our planet and mitigating the adverse effects of human activities on the environment.
