SMVDU Katra student selected for research internship from IIT Bombay

JAMMU, June 10: Hriday Vasudeva, final year B. Tech student of the School of Mechanical Engineering has had the prestigious opportunity to intern at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, where he would be engaged in a cutting-edge research project titled "Experimental Investigation of Hot Embossing on PMMA," under the esteemed guidance of Professor Soham Mujumdar. The project's cornerstone is the utilization of hot embossing as a cost-effective method for the mass production of micro-lens arrays (MLAs). The initial phase of my research is dedicated to refining the hot embossing process to enhance efficiency and reliability. This involves a comprehensive study of the parameters affecting the quality of embossing on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrates and the development of precise molds for the same. The endeavor aims to establish a standardized protocol that ensures the consistent quality of MLAs while remaining economically viable. As the project progresses, the focus will shift towards the production of high-quality MLAs. The current stage involves meticulous experimentation with PMMA to understand its behavior under various embossing conditions and to create molds that can accurately replicate the desired microstructures. Subsequently, bulk metallic glasses (BMG) will be introduced as a mold material due to their superior strength and thermal properties. Once the BMG molds are perfected, they will be employed to stamp the intricate MLA patterns onto PMMA sheets. This transition from PMMA to BMG molds is expected to address the challenges associated with the scalability of MLA production. The research findings thus far indicate promising avenues for optimizing the hot embossing process, which could revolutionize the manufacturing of MLAs, making them accessible for a wider range of applications due to reduced costs. The knowledge gained from this study will not only contribute to the field of mechanical engineering but also pave the way for advancements in optics and photonics, where MLAs are integral components.
