After biting dust, Omar not to contest assembly elections | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 10: After facing defeat on the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat at the hands of independent candidate Abdul Rashid Sheikh alias Engineer Rashid, Vice-President of the National Conference Omar Abdullah today announced that he will not contest the forthcoming Assembly elections of Jammu and Kashmir. “I am not contesting Assembly elections. I will not fight the election in the Union Territory, I am absolutely clear on that. I will help my Party, I will lead the campaign. But, I will not enter the Assembly of the Union Territory of J&K”, Omar said on Monday, adding, “I will do whatever possible for the victory of my party in the assembly elections”. Omar Abdullah further said that he would fight for the full statehood of Jammu and Kashmir and the restoration of the previous status of the erstwhile state. “Only after restoring the full statehood, then if possible I will seek an opportunity to enter the Assembly to play my part there”, Omar said, adding, “I will not humiliate myself by entering the Assembly of the Union Territory”. Earlier on November 3, 2022. National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah had announced that Omar A I will not enter the Assembly of the Union Territory of J&K. In 2020 after his release from detention, Omar had said he will not contest assembly elections till J&K remains a Union Territory. Former Chief Minister, who was the National Conference candidate from Baramulla Lok Sabha, was defeated by Independent candidate Engineer Rashid. Engineer Rashid, also created history by defeating a candidate on the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat by an all-time high margin. Engineer Rashid defeated former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by a margin of 2,04,142 votes, which is an all-time high for this Lok Sabha seat. Engineer Rashid secured 4,72,481 votes, while Omar Abdullah got 2,68,339 votes. Peoples' Conference chief Sajad Gani Lone, who was contesting this seat, stood third by securing 1,73,239 votes. |
