Jammu, June 14: Undeterred by the recent terror attacks in Jammu province, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre has decided to continue with the process of conducting maiden assembly elections in the Union Territory. While the central leadership of the BJP has asked the local unit to start preparations for the Assembly polls, authorities at the higher level have already conveyed the message to the J&K administration about the conduct of polls before September 30. Sources said that participation of people in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir has encouraged the Union Government to go for Assembly polls. “People’s overwhelming participation in the Parliament elections has reposed common masses’ faith in the democracy and democratic institutions of the country so the Union Government wants to build up on this positive atmosphere”, sources said and added that preparations for Assembly elections will go simultaneously with this year’s Amarnath Yatra. Their timing, coinciding with the installation of the new government at the Centre, aims to undermine the narrative of stability and normalcy in the region. The intention seems to be disrupting the democratic process, especially as the Election Commission of India prepares for Assembly elections.
