Although M Y Tarigami has not given a reason for Dr. Abdullah’s non-availability at the meeting, this development raised many eyebrows because the CPI(M) leader had not decided date of the meeting without taking consent from the National Conference leadership. Although the National Conference leadership has maintained a guarded silence over this development, it is widely believed that the party has decided not to become part of any opposition bloc at the J&K level. Sources said that the National Conference leadership has decided to contest the coming Assembly elections on its own without entering into any understanding with any opposition party. “By contesting the Assembly elections alone the National Conference wants to give many messages so the party has already started the process of selecting candidates for all the 90 seats of the Assembly”, sources said. The gathering, initially planned for August 7, aimed to discuss concerns including the increased delegation of powers to the Lieutenant Governor. According to Tarigami, the postponement occurred after National Conference president Farooq Abdullah indicated he would not be able to attend. "National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah expressed his inability to attend the meeting scheduled for August 7 in Jammu and suggested its postponement. As such, this meeting is postponed," said Tarigami. The primary focus of the meeting was to deliberate on the recent amendments to the Transaction of Business of the Government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Rules, 2019. These amendments grant the lieutenant governor greater authority over decisions concerning the police, officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), and the sanctioning of prosecutions in various cases. The amendments have faced criticism from all political parties in the region, with the exception of the BJP. |
