Jammu, Aug 2: After resigning from the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party former minister Usman Majid has not announced his future course of action, his decision to quit the party is likely to open a floodgate in the four-year-old political outfit. Usman Majid is not an isolated case many leaders in the J&K Apni Party are exploring possibilities in other political parties. Highly placed sources said that after the debacle of the Apni Party in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, many senior leaders in the party are concerned about their future because the party has failed to mark its presence. The Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party had contested elections on two Lok Sabha seats but its candidates failed to get respectable votes despite support from the BJP. On the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat, the Apni Party candidate Zafar Iqbal Manhas secured 1,42,195 votes and lost the election by a huge margin of 379641 votes. Almost the same was the situation in the Srinagar Parliamentary seat where the party candidate Mohammad Ashraf Mir got only 35,954 votes and lost the elections by a margin of 290912 votes. The Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party was formed on 8 March 2020 by ex-members of the PDP and Congress which included ex-ministers and former legislators. Altaf Bukhari was elected as the party's first president and Usman Majid was elected as vice-president. All units of the Apni Party in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district have decided to resign from the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. Majid said in a statement that the decision to resign has been carefully considered and reflects a unified stance among the members of the Bandipora units. “I am not in a hurry. After resigning from the Apni Party, I will hold discussions with my party workers and supporters at the grassroots to announce the future course of action”, Majid said. “This period of reflection and consultation will ensure that any future steps are taken in the best interests of the people of Bandipora. The goal is to forge a path that is more attuned to the aspirations and expectations of the people of Bandipora,” he added. Former Minister and ex-MLA from Bandipora, Usman Majid had resigned from the Congress party in February 2020 to join the Apni Party. Usman Majid is a two-time MLA from Bandipora and a strong leader in north Kashmir. Usman became MLA for the first time in 2002 when he fought for election as an independent candidate. Later, he was inducted as Minister of State for Finance in Mufti Muhammad Sayeed-led PDP- Congress combine. He won the 2014 Assembly elections again from Bandipora Assembly segment by defeating PDP’s Nizamuddin Bhat. |
