J&K Cong leaders Ignoring Satish Sharma annoys Rahul Gandhi | Party constitutes fact-finding panel | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 18: After the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi took serious note of the episode of denying the party mandate of Satish Sharma from the Chhamb Assembly segment, the Jammu and Kashmir Congress Committee awakened from the deep slumber and constituted a panel to ascertain the reason behind party’s worst-ever defeat in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. According to an official handout issued by the party, the Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Tariq Hameed Karra, in consultation with AICC Leadership, has constituted a fact-finding high-powered committee to ascertain the reasons behind the defeat of the Party in the recent Assembly elections, in Jammu regions and to suggest measures for strengthening the party. The Committee is expected to report within 30 days from today. Senior party leader Ravinder Sharma has been appointed as Chairman of the Committee while Jehangir Mir, Naresh Gupta, Thakur Balwan Singh, Shah Mohd Chowdhary, Ved Mahajan, and Dina Nath Baghat are the members of the panel. As reported by the Early Times in its October 18 edition, Rahul Gandhi sought accountability for Congress's historic defeat in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. He has demanded a detailed report on senior leaders' blunders in ticket distribution, particularly in denying Satish Sharma, a young and popular leader from Chhamb, a party mandate. During Omar Abdullah's oath-taking ceremony, Gandhi expressed surprise upon learning how local Congress leaders prioritized personal and financial interests over Sharma's candidacy. Sharma, contesting as an Independent, won the Chhamb seat, defeating Congress's official candidate, Tara Chand. This electoral debacle marks Congress's worst-ever performance in Jammu province, securing only one seat. In contrast, the 2014 elections, previously considered their worst showing, saw Congress win key constituencies like Surankote, Banihal, and Mahore. The Congress high command is taking action, seeking explanations from senior leaders who allegedly prioritized personal interests over younger candidates. Disciplinary action is likely against those responsible for granting tickets to undeserving candidates. |
