Pak’s nefarious design to stall strategic projects exposed | Gagangeer Terror Attack | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 21: Sunday’s Gagangeer terror attack was not a simple terror attack because first-time terrorists attacked workers who were engaged in a strategic development project in Jammu and Kashmir. Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, the Z-Morh Tunnel stands as a testament to India's engineering prowess and strategic foresight. This 6.4-kilometer tunnel, connecting Sonamarg health resort to Kangan town in Ganderbal district, is more than just an infrastructure project - it's a lifeline ensuring all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh. The area of the Z-Morh tunnel is strategically important as its construction will ensure seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Kargil and there will also be a considerable reduction in travel time between Srinagar and Leh. This tunnel will promote social and economic development in the entire region. Tourism in Sonamarg will be promoted including activities like whitewater rafting on Thajiwas Glacier and Sindh River. The tunnel's location near Gagangir is strategically significant, providing an alternate route to the treacherous Zojila Pass. This region, prone to harsh winters, heavy snowfall and avalanches, often disrupts connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh. The Z-Morh Tunnel mitigates these challenges, guaranteeing uninterrupted access to Sonamarg, a popular tourist destination along the Srinagar-Leh highway. Beyond its civilian utility, the tunnel holds immense military importance. Situated near sensitive border regions, it facilitates swift and reliable movement of military personnel and equipment. This strategic advantage is crucial for national security, particularly in times of crisis. The Z-Morh Tunnel is an economic boon for both Kashmir and Ladakh. By ensuring year-round connectivity, it boosts tourism, trade, and commerce. Local businesses thrive as accessibility improves, injecting vitality into the regional economy. Conceived by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2012, the project underwent significant developments. Initially awarded to Tunnelway Ltd., it was later taken over by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). APCO Infratech eventually secured the contract through a special purpose vehicle. The recent terror attack, resulting in the tragic loss of seven lives, underscores security concerns surrounding key infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities face heightened pressure to safeguard construction personnel and ensure project continuity. The Z-Morh Tunnel is part of an ambitious initiative encompassing 31 tunnel projects across Jammu and Kashmir, valued at approximately Rs 1.4 lakh crore. These projects aim to transform regional connectivity, bridging gaps and fostering economic growth. |
