NC can say ‘goodbye’ to Congress in J&K? | Article 370 Row | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 16: The Congress distancing itself from the special status resolution passed by the Omar Abdullah led government could lead to the National Conference saying “goodbye” to its ally in Jammu and Kashmir. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “NC Member Parliament Aga Ruhullah has already warned the Congress against questioning his party’s stand on the special status resolution.” “No INC president or JKPCC president has a right to misinterpret the resolution passed by the J&K Legislative Assembly in the last session. The purpose of that resolution is to express the people’s disapproval of all the amendments and unconstitutional abrogation of the guaranteed (Special) Status of J&K from the year 1953 to 2019,” the NC MP wrote on X. “If the Congress Party keeps on insisting that Article 370 is a settled issue, then the NC may be left with no other option other than to say goodbye to its coalition partner,” the analyst claimed. To substantiate his argument, the analyst said that the Congress has “nothing much to lose” in Jammu and Kashmir. “It has only won six seats in the 90-member assembly and it’s not a part of the government,” he said, “Had Congress not distanced itself from Article 370 and called it a settled issue, it could have faced losses in the poll bound Maharashtra and Jharkhand.” Another observer said, “The National Conference has already brought a special status resolution in the Assembly. It cannot back out from its demand to seek restoration of J&K’s special status to appease the Congress.” He said that both the parties have their own compulsions. “The Congress is a national party and it has to ensure that its image remains intact nationally. The National Conference has to cater to the people at the local level and it cannot sacrifice its interests for the Congress. If there is a clash of interests there is every possibility of NC saying goodbye to Congress in J&K,” the observer opined. It may be recalled that the NC-Congress fought the recently held Assembly elections in J&K in alliance. However, NC won 40 plus seats in the 90-member house and the Congress couldn’t even reach the double figures. |
