Agencies DEHRADUN, Jan 2: The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun, inaugurated the 11th edition of its annual Shaheed Memorial Cricket Tournament under Project Naman, a heartfelt initiative to honor the sacrifices of Indian Armed Forces personnel. This year, the tournament pays tribute to Veergati Prapt PTR Amit Kumar Anthwal, a brave soldier of the 4 PARA Special Forces who laid down his life on April 5, 2020, during an operation in the Kupwara Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Hailing from Village Kola in Pauri district, Uttarakhand, Amit Kumar Anthwal was only 30 years old when he made the ultimate sacrifice. He is survived by his parents, Shri Nagendra Prasad Anthwal (77) and Smt. Bhagwati Devi (65), who currently reside in Bhauwawala, Dehradun. As part of Project Naman, UPES will provide financial assistance of ?5 lakh to the martyr's family and offer a job opportunity to one family member. This initiative exemplifies the university's commitment to supporting the families of India's bravehearts. The tournament was inaugurated at the Bidholi Cricket Ground, featuring eight teams: UPES Blue, Pay Jal Nigam, PWD, UPCL Roorkee, Irrigation Haridwar, MDDA, Agricultural, and Jal Sansthan. The teams will compete over the next week, with the final match scheduled for January 9, 2025. The university reaffirmed its commitment to continuing initiatives like Project Naman, ensuring the sacrifices of India's heroes are remembered and their families supported. |
