Jammu-Srinagar come closer, Banihal bypass completed | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 5: The ambitious project of the widening of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway is also moving towards completion as the four-lane Banihal Bypass project has been completed. This announcement was made by Nitin Gadkari Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India. Travel time between Jammu and Srinagar will decrease further after completion of this vital four-lane bypass bridge in Banihal town. Initially, authorities will open one double lane of the bypass, while its second tube will be opened for traffic after 15 days when its junction with the highway is completed. The double-lane narrow stretch of the old highway in Banihal town would remain congested with traffic and marketeers, causing daily blockage of the traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The bypass, spanning 2.35 kilometers, will strengthen national security logistics and enhance tourism prospects in the region, Union Minister for Highway and Transport Nitin Gadkari said. “In Jammu and Kashmir, we have successfully completed a 4-lane, 2.35 km bypass to Banihal town at an cost of Rs 224.44 crore. Strategically located on the Ramban–Banihal section of NH-44, the bypass features 4 viaducts spanning 1,513 meters and 3 culverts, effectively addressing the persistent bottleneck caused by roadside markets and shops”, the Minister posted on his social media handle. “I The ambitious project of widening of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is moving towards completion. Authorities have already completed the crucial Jaiswal bridge over the river Chenab and constructed a 1.08 kilometre long two-lane Ramban Viaduct. In the total 36 km Ramban-Banihal stretch, 14 km of the route between Marog and Makarkote villages was full of 'trouble points'. Executing agencies were finding it difficult to work this treacherous stretch so it was decided to realign the project to skip vulnerable spots. Work on the widening of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was started in 2011 with the target of completing it within five years. After widening the highway, the travel time would get reduced by half as the distance would be reduced by 50 km bypassing a number of treacherous points. |
