Fraudster posing as Govt officer held

SRINAGAR, Jan 7: Police in Srinagar have arrested a fraudster who falsely claimed to be a government officer to defraud an individual of a substantial sum of money promising to release a drug peddler detained under drug-related crime, officials said on Tuesday.
Police said on January 6, 2025, a complaint was filed by Safiya Riyaz accusing Sadiq Hassan Chaloo, a resident of Shaheedgunj, of impersonating a government officer and defrauding her of Rs 2 lakh.

A complaint was filed by Safiya Riyaz accusing Sadiq Hassan Chaloo of impersonating a government officer and defrauding her of Rs 2 lakh.

Safiya after discovering the deception demanded the money back, the accused returned only a partial amount and denied the rest.
Police registered a case and arrested the fraudster.

Police registered, a case under sections 318(4), 319, and 351(2) of the BNS Act and arrested the fraudster. The investigation is ongoing, they added.
The husband of the applicant Riyaz Ahmad Channa had been booked under PIT NDPS Act and is presently lodged in Sub Jail Baderwah.
“We urge the public not to fall prey to any individual claiming to influence law enforcement authorities, and anyone making such claim should be immediately reported to the nearest Police Station or dial 112”, police said.
