Jammu, Jan 12: A war of words erupted on Saturday between the ruling National Conference (NC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir, following a social media post by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The post, which highlighted preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sonamarg to inaugurate the Z-Morh tunnel, ignited a heated debate online. Omar Abdullah tweeted about his review of the arrangements for Modi’s visit, which is scheduled for Monday. The Z-Morh tunnel, a vital infrastructure project, will facilitate year-round access to the scenic Sonamarg valley, transforming it into a sought-after ski destination. Additionally, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time between Srinagar and Kargil/Leh, bringing economic and logistical benefits to the region. “Visited Sonmarg today to review preparations for PM @narendramodi ji’s visit on Monday. The inauguration of the Z-morh tunnel will open Sonmarg to tourism all year round, Sonmarg will now be developed as a great ski resort. The local population will not have to leave in winter & the travel time to Kargil/Leh from Srinagar will also reduce”, Omar posted on ‘X’ While the Chief Minister’s post primarily aimed to showcase the developmental initiatives under his administration, it was met with sarcasm from PDP leaders. These videos, showcasing Mehbooba's positive remarks about the BJP during her tenure as Chief Minister in alliance with the party, became a rallying point for NC sympathizers. The exchange of barbs highlighted the deep-seated rivalry between the NC and PDP, two of Jammu and Kashmir’s most prominent political parties. While the NC accused the PDP of political opportunism and hypocrisy, the PDP countered by alleging that the NC was trying to appease the central leadership for political mileage. Social media users, meanwhile, were divided over the spat. Some criticized both parties for indulging in trivial politics instead of addressing pressing issues faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Others defended their respective leaders, fueling a polarized online discourse. The political undertones of the tunnel inauguration also drew attention. With Prime Minister Modi set to preside over the event, both the NC and PDP are keenly aware of the implications of this developmental milestone. The Z-Morh tunnel, which promises to boost tourism, enhance connectivity, and improve the livelihoods of the local population, has become a symbolic achievement that both parties want to claim credit for. As the political drama unfolds, the spotlight remains on the Monday inauguration, which is expected to draw significant public and media attention. While the Z-Morh tunnel represents progress for the region, the ongoing exchange between the NC and PDP underscores the charged political climate in Jammu and Kashmir, where even developmental projects become battlegrounds for political supremacy. |
