Jammu, Jan 17: The Agrometeorology Section of SKUAST-Jammu, under the guidance of Dr. B.N. Tripathi, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, and Prof. S.K. Gupta, Director Research, organized a one-day “Farmer Awareness Cum Agricultural Input Distribution Programme” at village Meshian, Miran Sahib, Jammu. The event aimed to raise awareness about climate change and its impact on agriculture, while also distributing agricultural inputs to SC farmers to enhance their production and income. The program, attended by more than 104 farmers (both male and female), was graced by Hon’ble Dr. Narinder Singh Raina, MLA (South-Jammu and R.S. Pura), as the Chief Guest. Prof. S.K. Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu, served as the Guest of Honour. The event featured several expert presentations on key agricultural topics. Dr. Mahender Singh, Professor and Head of the Agrometeorology Section, welcomed the attendees and emphasized the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities. He stressed the significance of utilizing weather and climate-based agro-advisories to optimize farming practices and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on crops. In his address, Dr. Narinder Singh Raina encouraged farmers to engage in such programs to benefit from the latest technologies developed by SKUAST-Jammu. He also assured the farmers that government schemes would be available to support them. As part of the program, he distributed agricultural inputs to the farmers. Prof. S.K. Gupta highlighted various initiatives undertaken by SKUAST-Jammu to enhance the income of farmers. He urged the farming community to make use of the biweekly weather information and agro-advisories issued by the Agrometeorology Section for better agricultural management. Other experts, including Dr. B.R. Bazaya, Chief Scientist, and Dr. A.K. Singh, Professor of Entomology, shared valuable insights on efficient weed management, integrated pest control, and the use of agro-met advisories in vegetable crop planning. The event also saw participation from local community leaders such as Mr. Rajpal, Sarpanch, and Mr. Surinder Kumar, Naib Sarpanch, along with several students and scholars who helped facilitate the program. Mrs. Doordarshani Handoo, Agrimet Observer, presented the vote of thanks, appreciating the farmers for their active participation. The event was coordinated by Mr. Dharamvir and Suresh Kumar, who also registered the farmers. This awareness program serves as a significant step towards enhancing the agricultural knowledge of farmers and improving their resilience to climate change. |
