Jammu, Jan 24: A significant step forward has been achieved in the long-standing struggle for the implementation of central minimum wages in power projects. A deputation from the Kissan Mazdoor Union, affiliated with Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), led by Working President Balwan Singh, along with union advisors Aizaz Hussain, BaDal Parihar, and others, met with the Regional Labour Commissioner of the Ministry of Labour, Government of India, at its office in Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. The union had been advocating for the enforcement of central minimum wages in power projects in District Kishtwar, where for more than two years, workers had faced resistance from power project managements in this regard. In a breakthrough development, the Chief Labour Commissioner, Government of India, approved the application of central minimum wages to power projects. Following this approval, the Regional Labour Commissioner issued directives to Chinab Valley Power Project Ltd. to implement the central minimum wages across all their projects. Separate instructions were also given to Mega Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd. based on the representation from the Bhawan Nirman Mazdoor Sangh, affiliated with BMS. As a result of these efforts, more than 5,000 workers will benefit from the revised minimum wages, ensuring fair compensation for their labor in the power sector. This marks a significant victory for workers’ rights in the region. |
