During the past few years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an unprecedented transformation in its road infrastructure, thanks to the Centre’s liberal funding and focused developmental initiatives. Improved road connectivity is not just an indicator of progress but also a catalyst for economic growth, social integration, and enhanced security. The Centre’s commitment to bridging the connectivity gap in the region has resulted in numerous projects that are reshaping the transportation landscape of the Union Territory (UT). The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), along with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and state agencies, have undertaken extensive road and tunnel construction projects. One of the most significant projects in this regard is the four-laning of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), which has dramatically reduced travel time between the two regions. The completion of the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, now named Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel, and the Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel has further eased traffic congestion, making all-weather connectivity a reality. Apart from national highways, rural road connectivity has also received a substantial boost under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Remote villages that remained cut off during harsh winters now have reliable road networks, facilitating easier access to education, healthcare, and markets. Under PMGSY-III, several hundred kilometers of roads are being constructed or upgraded, bringing the most backward areas into the mainstream of development. The ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojana has also played a crucial role in improving inter-district connectivity. New highways, bridges, and expressways are being constructed at a rapid pace, ensuring that trade, tourism, and local businesses flourish. The Srinagar Ring Road project, once completed, will significantly decongest city traffic and enhance connectivity to nearby districts. Moreover, the government’s focus on constructing tunnels and alternative routes has proved to be a game-changer for road infrastructure in the UT. The Zoji La Tunnel, which is currently under construction, will provide year-round access to Ladakh, eliminating the seasonal disruptions that have long plagued the region. The Shinkun La Tunnel and the Sadhna Pass Tunnel are other strategic projects aimed at bolstering connectivity in some of the most challenging terrains. Better road infrastructure has had a cascading effect on various sectors of the economy. The tourism industry, a vital pillar of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, has benefitted immensely from improved accessibility. Increased footfall of tourists due to better roads has given a boost to local businesses, hotels, and artisans. Similarly, agriculture and horticulture sectors, particularly the export of apples, walnuts, and saffron, have gained from quicker and more efficient transportation networks. |
