Early Times Report AKHNOOR, Mar 10: Government Degree College (GDC) Akhnoor celebrated International Women's Day with great zeal and zest under the aegis of the Women's Studies Centre. This event was guided by worthy Principal, Dr. Romilla Malla Bhat, and focused on the theme "Accelerate Action," by undertaking legal aspect in view. The Chief Guest for the occasion, Ms. Arushi Shukla, Judicial Magistrate First Class in Akhnoor, delivered an insightful address on the legal aspects of gender equality during a Women's Day event. She emphasized the constitutional safeguards offered under Articles 14, 15, and 16, which prohibit discrimination on the grounds of sex and ensure equal opportunities for all, including provisions for special protection for women. In her speech, Ms. Shukla highlighted key legislative frameworks that protect women, such as the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, the Domestic Violence Act, and the Maternity Benefit Act. However, she also pointed out that despite these laws, a significant gap remains between legal provisions and their implementation in real life. In her concluding statement, Ms Shukla urged that bridging this gap requires addressing the root causes, including a lack of awareness, social stigma, and systemic bias. To overcome these barriers, Ms. Shukla suggested several steps, including enhancing representation and solidarity, increasing training and sensitization efforts, fostering community empowerment, encouraging individuals to break their silence, and advocating for stronger policy interventions. She also emphasized the importance of grassroots activism in creating real change for women's rights and equality. Dr. Romilla Malla Bhat in her address spoke on the significance of International Women's Day which is not only a day to celebrate the achievements of women but also a call to action to continue fighting for gender equality. She further assured that she is committed to bridging the gap between laws and lived reality, ensuring that every woman can access her full rights and live without fear of discrimination or violence. Dr. Malla believes that sustainable progress is only possible when women are afforded the same opportunities, protection, and representation as men in all sectors of society. She assured that GDC Akhnoor is dedicated to advocating for gender equality and the empowerment of women. Through education, legal advocacy, and community outreach, GDC Akhnoor work to remove barriers, promote women's rights, and ensure a world where every woman has the opportunity to succeed.
