Ahead of Eid, fraudsters create fake social media shopping profiles to cheat people | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 29: As the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, online fraudsters have intensified their deceptive activities by creating fake social media shopping profiles to exploit innocent buyers, particularly targeting women in Kashmir. These fraudulent profiles, operating under names like “Lady Hut” and “Lady Hut Kashmir”, have been designed to dupe people by offering counterfeit products and collecting payments through unauthorized channels. After receiving multiple complaints regarding these fraudulent shopping pages, the Jammu and Kashmir Police issued a public advisory warning residents, especially in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, to refrain from purchasing products from these unverified sources. Authorities have observed that these fraudulent pages are using deceptive marketing tactics, offering fake discounts and promotions to lure unsuspecting customers. Once buyers place an order, they are asked to make payments in advance via unauthorized bank accounts and UPI IDs. However, in most cases, either the purchased products are never delivered, or customers receive poor-quality or fake items. Fraudsters create fake pages on social media with attractive product images and enticing offers to lure buyers. Customers are asked to make prepayments via UPI or bank transfers before dispatch. Once the payment is made, the seller stops responding, blocks the buyer, or delivers low-quality counterfeit products. These fraudsters often change page names and create new profiles to avoid detection. To safeguard people from falling victim to such scams, District Police Anantnag has urged the public to remain vigilant and take the following precautions: Verify Authenticity: Before purchasing from online stores, especially from pages like “Lady Hut”, ensure that they are official and verified. Look for customer reviews and official website details. Avoid Unverified Payments: Never transfer money to unverified bank accounts or UPI addresses linked to unknown social media pages. Opt for Cash on Delivery (COD) whenever possible. Report Suspicious Activity: If you come across fraudulent pages or profiles, immediately report them to social media platforms and notify the nearest police station. The District Police Anantnag is actively monitoring and investigating these fraudulent activities and taking necessary legal action against those involved. Authorities have also urged social media users, especially women, to be extra cautious while engaging in online shopping. Additionally, the police are conducting awareness campaigns to educate people about safe online shopping practices and the dangers of falling prey to cyber fraud. Citizens are encouraged to share this advisory widely to help prevent others from becoming victims of such scams. The Jammu and Kashmir Police has reiterated its commitment to tackling cyber fraud and protecting residents from online scams. Anyone who has been a victim of such fraud is advised to lodge a formal complaint with the police at the earliest. |
