Jammu, Apr 6: Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jammu on Sunday evening, kicking off a three-day tour of Jammu and Kashmir—his first since the National Conference government, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, took office in the Union Territory in October 2024. Shah landed at the technical airport, where he was welcomed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and senior BJP leaders, according to officials. Amit Shah’s visit attached importance, keeping in view the recent political and security related developments in Jammu and Kashmir. On the political front, the National Conference-led ruling coalition has stepped up attacks on the Union Government and Lieutenant Governor’s administration for undermining the authority of the elected government. On security scenario, some parts of Jammu region have witnessed repeated terror attacks, especially Reasi, Udhampur and Kathua districts. The visit coincides with the BJP’s 46th foundation day, celebrated earlier in the day with enthusiasm by party activists and leaders across the region. Shah is slated to head to the BJP headquarters in Trikuta Nagar on Sunday night for a meeting with party MLAs and office bearers. Earlier, J&K BJP president Sat Sharma hoisted the party flag at the headquarters in the presence of senior leaders, including MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta, and Leader of Opposition in the J&K Assembly Sunil Sharma. Party flags were also raised at district headquarters, BJP offices, and activists’ homes throughout Jammu and Kashmir, a party spokesperson said. Security has been tightened across the region, with police and forces on high alert due to Shah’s visit, officials confirmed. On Monday, Shah will travel to the BSF Border Outpost Vinay in Kathua to assess the situation along the India-Pakistan border. Later, he will meet family members of Jammu and Kashmir Police martyrs at the Raj Bhavan in Jammu, where he will also distribute appointment letters to some selected on compassionate grounds. On April 8, Shah will shift focus to Srinagar, beginning with a review of development programs in the Union Territory at a meeting at the Raj Bhavan. He will then chair a separate meeting at the same venue to evaluate the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The visit comes amid heightened political activity in the region, with Shah expected to address both security concerns and development initiatives during his tour. |
