REASI, Apr 8: Krishi Vigyan Kendra(KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) organised training programme on "Empowering rural youths through scientific backyard poultry farming" under the ARYA (Attracting and Retaining Youths in Agriculture) project here today at Jadh village in Reasi district of J&K which was attended by a number of farmers of the area. The major objective of the programme was to educate the rural youths on scientific backyard poultry farming and to create productive assets for the resource poor rural youths of hilly areas through capacity building and inputs support.The programme was organised under the dynamic leadership of Vice Chancellor, Prof. B.N. Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof.Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. Dr. Banarsi Lal,Chief Scientist &Head of KVK Reasi warmly welcomed the participants and briefed the objective of the programme. He said that the major objective of ARYA project is to develop agri-entrepreneurship among the rural youths and make them self-reliance. He further said that ARYA project is an opportunity for the youths to showcase their creativity through agri-entrepreneurship. He added that hilly areas of Reasi distt. of J&K has an immense potential in poultry farming and it can play a significant role in enhancing the income and employment among the rural youths of the area.He discussed on the horti-poultry model and added that through horti-poultry farming rural youths can generate more income and employment. He stressed on the adoption of horti-poultry models in the area.Dr.Mandeep Singh Azad,Scientist spoke in detail on scientific backyard poultry farming and guided participants on improved breeds for backyard poultry,poultry house management, integrated backyard poultry management practices and marketing of poultry products. He suggested the constant access to outdoors for natural diet of grains, forages etc. for backyard poultry farming.He stressed on timely management of poultry diseases for more farm returns. He urged the participants to adopt organic poultry farming and discussed on the organic management of poultry farms. He also discussed on the low cost organic poultry feed and suggested the Azolla feed for the poultry birds.
