Cong Ignores NC

The Congress Party’s intensified campaign for the restoration of J&K’s statehood without taking National Conference on board is an indication that all is not well between the coalition partners in Jammu and Kashmir.
Recently, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently called on the Congress leadership to engage directly with the NC to align efforts on this critical issue.
The Chief Minister dismissed Congress’s claims that the NC did not support their recent protests, clarifying that no prior discussions or coordination took place.
He said that the NC learnt about these protests from newspapers and no one from Congress reached out directly, nor were these protests discussed at the recent INDIA bloc meeting.
This silence speaks volumes about the growing disconnect between Congress and the NC, despite their common goals, including the restoration of J&K’s statehood.
The episode raises fundamental questions about the functionality and cohesion of the INDIA bloc in Jammu and Kashmir. While the alliance was expected to present a united front against the BJP-led central government, such unilateral actions threaten to fragment the very purpose of the coalition. When alliance partners begin acting in silos, especially on matters as sensitive and crucial as the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s status, the credibility of their combined political agenda begins to wane.
This rift also reflects a larger pattern in coalition politics where trust deficits and lack of internal dialogue can derail common objectives. The Congress, if genuinely committed to a collaborative approach, must respect its partners by ensuring open channels of communication and collective strategy-making. Similarly, the NC must continue to assert its role as a key regional stakeholder.
As the issue the restoration of their statehood, they deserve a leadership that is cohesive, communicative, and united.
It is imperative for Congress and the NC to recalibrate their partnership and forge a shared path forward — or risk losing the confidence of those they claim to represent.
