Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 18: The devastating cloudburst in Kishtwar has shaken Jammu and Kashmir to its core, leaving more than 60 people dead, over 80 missing, and many others injured who are undergoing treatment at GMC Hospital, Jammu. Considered one of the worst natural disasters of the decade, the tragedy has hit the Machail Yatra pilgrims and local communities particularly hard.
In such testing times, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have looked to their leaders for support, expecting them to share their grief and extend both moral and practical assistance. Leaders from across the political spectrum—including regional as well as national parties—have rushed to the affected site in Paddar, Kishtwar, and to GMC Jammu to meet the injured, express solidarity, and assure every possible help.
However, questions are being raised within the Congress party and outside over the absence of JKPCC President Mr. Tariq Hamid Karra, who, even after three days of the tragedy, has not visited GMC Jammu—barely a few minutes away from his official residence. His failure to meet the injured and bereaved families has left many party workers and members of the public deeply disappointed.
Senior and local Congress leaders have visited both the hospital and the affected area to console the victims and their families, but the absence of the party president has sent a worrying signal. Observers point out that in moments of tragedy, leadership is tested the most. Quick action, timely presence, and empathetic engagement with victims are not mere symbolic gestures but essential responsibilities.
Political analysts and party insiders are now urging Mr. Karra to step forward without further delay, visit the hospital and the affected families, and personally reassure both the people and the Congress cadre that the party stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Jammu and Kashmir in this hour of grief.
