Continuous rainfall forces school closure
Tawi River water level rises alarmingly

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 2: Relentless rainfall has thrown life out of gear in parts of Jammu Division, prompting the Directorate of School Education, Jammu (DSEJ), to order the closure of all government and private schools across the region on September 3, 2025. The decision comes amid mounting concerns over rising water levels, flash floods, and growing threats to infrastructure and public safety.
Heavy and continuous rains over the past 24 hours have led to a significant rise in the water level of the Tawi river, especially in the Udhampur and Jammu districts. Officials have issued alerts in low-lying and flood-prone areas, including the Danzer zone, where swelling waters pose a serious threat to nearby habitations and agricultural land. Reports suggest minor landslides and waterlogging have already disrupted road connectivity in several pockets, hampering movement and increasing risk for commuters.
The official order, signed by Dr. Naseem Javaid Chowdhary (JKAS), Director of School Education, Jammu, underscored that student and staff safety is the top priority. “In view of the situation and to ensure safety, all Government and Private schools across Jammu Division shall remain closed on 03-09-2025,” the directive read.
Authorities have further instructed schools to conduct online classes wherever possible to ensure continuity of academics. Meanwhile, district administrations have been asked to remain on high alert and monitor the water levels of rivers and streams round the clock.
Local residents in Udhampur and the Danzer belt expressed concern over the rising Tawi waters, recalling past instances where flash floods damaged property and disrupted lives. Officials from the Disaster Management Department are coordinating with police and civil authorities to prepare evacuation plans in case the situation worsens.
The precautionary measures reflect a proactive approach by the administration to safeguard lives, even as the rains show no signs of slowing down.
