CM Omar Keeps NC Away
12/16/2025 10:41:10 PM
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has drawn a clear line between the National Conference and Congress. He has described the Congress party’s so-called “Vote Chori” campaign as the grand old party’s own initiative that has got nothing to do with NC.
His remarks underline a growing unease within the INDIA bloc and expose deeper fault lines that continue to weaken the Opposition’s collective challenge to the ruling BJP-led alliance.
“Every party is free to set its own agenda. The Congress has chosen ‘vote chori’ and SIR as its issues. Who are we to object? We have nothing to do with it,” Omar said and distanced his party from the campaign.
The J&K Chief Minister from the very beginning has been critical of the Congress’s ‘vote chori’ campaign. He has always supported Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). After NC’s victory in 2024 J&K Assembly elections Omar cautioned against selective criticism based on electoral outcomes.
He made it explicitly clear that Congress and its allies celebrate victories won through EVMs but if they lose. they start castigating the system. “One day voters choose you; the next day they don’t. I never blamed the machines” he had said.
After the formation of INDIA Bloc, Omar Abdullah has been pointing out flaws and the shortcomings of the Opposition. He has been calling spade a spade and has refrained from indulging in appeasement politics.
While remaining a constituent of the alliance, he has consistently argued that unless the Opposition addresses its internal flaws and messaging incoherence, it will struggle to present a credible alternative to the BJP. Such honesty, though uncomfortable for allies, is essential for any alliance that aspires to govern.
The National Conference has remained a constituent of the INDIA bloc, where Congress is the largest opposition party in Parliament. Yet remarks made by Omar underline the fractured approaches within the alliance. Even in Jammu and Kashmir where Congress is the junior coalition partner of the NC, both the parties have been treading different paths. No Congress leader is a part of the Omar Abdullah’s cabinet, nor does the government consult its partner while taking any decision.
Omar Abdullah’s stance sends a powerful message: alliances cannot be built on contradictions and selective principles. Credibility in politics comes from consistency, respect for democratic institutions, and the courage to call out one’s own allies when they go astray. Whether the INDIA bloc heeds this message or continues to drift amid internal discord will determine its relevance in the political battles ahead.
