1/27/2026 11:16:41 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 25: The Jammu and Kashmir Police has once again emerged on top in Republic Day gallantry awards, securing the highest number of bravery medals among all States and Union Territories, reaffirming its frontline role in maintaining internal security.
With a total of 52 medals, including 33 gallantry awards, J&K Police leads the national tally in bravery medals for Republic Day 2026. The remaining honours include 17 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) and two President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM), officials said.
An official statement said that 52 officers and personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police have been conferred gallantry and service medals on the occasion of the 76th Republic Day.
“Among those awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service are three Inspectors General of Police — Mohd Suleman Choudhary, Sujit Kumar and Vivek Gupta,” the statement said.
Other recipients of the MSM include Deputy Superintendents of Police Himat Singh, Champa Devi Sharma and Khushwant Singh; Inspector Anil Sharma; DSP Gurmeet Singh; Inspector Reyaz Ahmad Langoo; Assistant Sub-Inspector Sham Lal; Head Constable Gopal Singh; Inspectors Sardar Singh, Neeraj Kumar Koul and Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat; Constables Tawheed Ahmad Thoker and Shubh Kumar; and Assistant Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh Bali.
“In addition, two senior officers — Deputy Inspectors General of Police Haseeb Mughal and Nisha Nathyal — were conferred the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service,” the statement said, adding that 33 J&K Police personnel were awarded the Medal for Gallantry for acts of bravery in the line of duty.
The gallantry awardees include Deputy Superintendents of Police Javaid Ahmad Lone, Mohammad Ashraf and Mohan Lal; Inspector Younis Khan; Assistant Sub-Inspector Davinder Kumar; Head Constable Shabeer Ahmad Narwaroo; IPS officer Tanushree; Senior Superintendent of Police Shabir Nawab; and several other officers and personnel across various ranks and units.
At the national level, a total of 982 personnel from the police, fire services, home guards, civil defence and correctional services have been awarded gallantry and service medals on Republic Day 2026, the Union Home Ministry said.
The awards include 125 gallantry medals, with the highest number — 45 medals — going to personnel deployed in the Jammu and Kashmir operations theatre, followed by 35 from Naxal violence-affected areas and five from the North-East region. Four fire service rescuers are also among the gallantry award recipients.
According to the official breakup, Jammu and Kashmir Police received the highest number of gallantry medals at 33, followed by Maharashtra Police with 31, Uttar Pradesh Police with 18, and Delhi Police with 14.
Among the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the CRPF is the only force to receive bravery citations this year, with 12 gallantry medals.
The list also includes 101 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 756 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) awarded to officers and personnel across services.
As per guidelines, gallantry medals are awarded for rare and conspicuous acts of bravery, including saving lives and property, preventing crime, or arresting criminals, with due regard to the risks involved in the line of duty. The PSM is awarded for a specially distinguished record of service, while the MSM recognises valuable service marked by dedication, resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
