| BJP backs statehood but links it to lasting peace | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 5: Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, on Wednesday said that the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir would take place only when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is convinced that lasting peace has been achieved and no Kashmiri youth would pick up guns or indulge in stone-pelting. Speaking during the discussion on the Lieutenant Governor’s address in the Assembly, Sharma said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fully supports the restoration of statehood but maintained that the situation must be conducive for such a step. “Statehood will be restored only after an atmosphere is created in which no Kashmiri youth takes up arms or resorts to violence,” he said. The Leader of Opposition further stressed that restoration of statehood should come at a time when no youth loses his or her life due to violence. “There must be lasting peace, stability, and an atmosphere of tranquillity in Jammu and Kashmir before such an important decision is taken,” he added. Highlighting what he termed as a major achievement, Sharma said that in the year 2025, not a single local youth in Jammu and Kashmir picked up a gun to join the ranks of terrorist organisations. “This is the first time since the eruption of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir that an entire year has passed without any local youth joining terror groups,” he told the House. Sharma said this development reflected significant improvement in the security situation and underscored the need to consolidate peace on the ground. He reiterated that the BJP remains committed to the restoration of statehood, but only in an environment where peace is permanent and the younger generation is completely distanced from violence. |
