RS PURA, Feb 21: The Department of Dogri, GDC R.S. Pura, organized a special screening of the acclaimed Dogri play "Baba Jitto" to commemorate International Mother Language Day. The event aimed to promote linguistic diversity and highlight the rich cultural heritage of the Dogri language.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of the College Principal, Prof.(Dr.) Preetpal Kour, who emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting regional languages as vital carriers of culture, tradition and identity. Faculty members and students of Dogri Department attended the screening with enthusiasm.
The play "Baba Jitto," based on the life and sacrifice of the revered Dogra folk hero Baba Jitto, portrays his struggle against injustice and exploitation. Through its powerful narrative and emotive performances, the play beautifully reflects the socio-cultural ethos of the Duggar region and underscores the significance of safeguarding linguistic and cultural heritage.
Speaking on the occasion, the Head of the Department of Dogri, Dr. Sunil Kumar Mangoch highlighted that celebrating International Mother Language Day serves as a reminder of the responsibility to preserve indigenous languages and pass them on to future generations. The screening was followed by an interactive session where students shared their views on the importance of mother tongues in shaping personal and collective identity. The event concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Dr. Jyoti Thappa, reiterating the department's commitment to promoting Dogri language and literature through such meaningful initiatives. The faculty who grace the occasion were Dr. Deepali Bhagat, Dr. Aparna Bharti, Dr. Meenu Chib, Dr. Ruchi and Dr. Kamakshi Sharma.
