Bishnah, Feb 21: The Departments of Languages of Government Degree College, Bishnah, under the aegis of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized a one-day International Seminar on the theme “Mother Language: The Soul of Cultural Identity” in hybrid mode to commemorate International Mother Language Day. The seminar provided a global academic platform for meaningful dialogue on linguistic diversity and cultural heritage. Conducted in both offline and online formats, the seminar witnessed wide national and international participation. Renowned poet, writer and dramatist Jenab Jamshed Masroor graced the occasion as the Chief Guest through an online Zoom session. In his address, he eloquently highlighted the emotional, cultural and historical significance of mother languages and their vital role in preserving identity and heritage across cultures. Five distinguished academicians from various degree colleges of the Jammu region attended as Guests of Honour, including Dr. Snobar, Associate Professor of Punjabi from GDC Ramgarh; Dr. Joginder Singh, Associate Professor of Dogri from GDC Samba; Prof. Balwan Singh, Associate Professor of Hindi from GCOE Canal Road Jammu; Prof. Afpan Ali, Associate Professor of Urdu from GDC Reasi; and Shri Mohinder Kumar, scholar from the Department of Sanskrit, University of Jammu. The speakers collectively emphasized the importance of mother languages and the urgent need to preserve them to safeguard cultural identity and ensure contemporary relevance. The session reflected the spirit of unity in diversity. Prof. Kashab Sharma, Head of the Department of History, shared his reflections on love for one’s mother tongue, stating that since ancient times the cultural strength and historical continuity of a region have depended upon the vitality of its language, which forms the backbone of regional identity. Principal Dr. Shallu Samyal, in her message, appreciated the initiative of the Language Departments and IQAC, noting that such multilingual academic platforms promote inclusivity, cultural harmony and holistic education. The seminar was further enriched by the presence of senior faculty member Dr. Vasudha Chaudhari.
Faculty members and students of the college participated enthusiastically. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Koushal Kiran Thacker, Head of the Department of Urdu, while the proceedings were conducted by Dr. Kusum, Head of the Department of Punjabi. Adding a vibrant cultural touch, students presented poetry in different mother languages, showcasing India’s rich linguistic diversity. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ekta Rani from the Department of Hindi. The programme was successfully coordinated by Prof. Shrotika Rajput, Convener, IQAC, with the active support of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. |
