| ‘Officers to map, monitor fresh drug hot spots in all 20 districts’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 13: With Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha setting a 100‑day deadline to rid Jammu and Kashmir of the drug menace, authorities have launched an aggressive crackdown, intensifying surveillance and enforcement across the Union Territory. According to highly placed sources, senior police officers have been directed to map and monitor drug hotspots in their jurisdictions. The focus is on dismantling these concentrated hubs of narcotics activity, which have proliferated as traffickers shift operations to evade law enforcement. At the 14th UT‑level Narco Coordination Centre meeting last July, officials reported 220 hotspots, including 20 newly flagged areas. Since then, the number has grown as the drug mafia adapts. Authorities say 33 hotspots have already been dismantled, resulting in 413 arrests, but traffickers continue to relocate their networks. Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police have now been tasked with keeping constant watch on hotspot districts, taking punitive action against those involved in the trade. Pharmacies are under scrutiny as well, with strict orders to act against outlets selling psychotropic substances without prescriptions. Online pharmacies and courier services are also being monitored to block new channels of abuse. Officials have further been instructed to analyze conviction data under the NDPS Act, with accountability measures for officers failing to secure results in drug cases. The campaign reflects a zero‑tolerance approach, as the administration pushes to meet the 100‑day target and dismantle what has become one of the region’s most entrenched social evils. |
