| Ambassadors Of Cultural Heritage | | | Craftsmen and artisans of Jammu and Kashmir are true ambassadors of cultural heritage. They are the ones who through their works have played a vital role in making J&K popular globally. Recently Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated ‘Know Your Artisan’ under Soulful Kashmir initiative at Kashmir Haat and emphasised upon holding of such events with greater frequency and duration, so that the ‘golden hands’ and rich cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir are provided an ideal platform to reach out to a larger target audience. He directed the Handicrafts and Handloom Department to institutionalize the ‘Know Your Artisan’ initiative as a regular feature and to extend the present edition to maximize the outreach and impact. Despite their immense contribution to the region’s global recognition, artisans have often remained on the margins—grappling with limited market access, inadequate recognition, and the pressures of modern commercialization. It is in this context that initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between artisans and markets assume great significance. The recent inauguration of the ‘Know Your Artisan’ programme under the Soulful Kashmir initiative by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at Kashmir Haat is a step in the right direction. By emphasizing the need to hold such events more frequently and for longer durations, the government has acknowledged a fundamental truth: artisans need sustained platforms, not one-off showcases. These platforms not only provide visibility but also create direct connections between the creators and consumers, fostering appreciation and ensuring fair value for the work involved. Institutionalizing the ‘Know Your Artisan’ initiative, as directed by the Chief Minister, could prove transformative. When made a regular feature, such programmes can build a consistent marketplace where artisans are not just participants but central figures. It allows buyers to understand the stories, techniques, and cultural significance behind each product, thereby enhancing its value beyond mere commerce. Moreover, the idea of extending the current edition to maximize outreach is equally important. In an era dominated by mass production and digital marketplaces, traditional crafts often struggle to compete. Expanding the reach of such initiatives both physically and through digital integration can help artisans tap into national and international audiences, ensuring that their work receives the recognition it deserves. |
