| Alert farmer foils Pak drone drug drop, 3 Kg Heroin seized at Bishnah border | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 20: The vigilance of a farmer from Jammu’s border belt thwarted a major cross-border narcotics smuggling attempt on Wednesday after he discovered nearly three kilograms of heroin allegedly dropped by a Pakistan-based drone in his agricultural field in Bahadurpur village of the Arnia-Bishnah sector. The recovery has sent security agencies into high alert, with investigators suspecting that the consignment was part of an organised narco-smuggling network operating from across the International Border. According to police, the heroin was packed in six waterproof packets weighing around 500 grams each, a method commonly used in drone-dropped consignments of narcotics and weapons sent from Pakistan into Indian territory. The suspicious package was spotted at around 6 a.m. by Bodh Raj, a resident of Bahadurpur village, while he was ploughing his recently harvested wheat field with a tractor. Realising that the sealed packet appeared unusual, the farmer immediately informed the police. Acting swiftly, teams from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, including officers from the Arnia and Bishnah police stations, rushed to the spot, secured the area and recovered the consignment. Officials believe the package may have remained concealed in the standing wheat crop for several days. It became visible only after the crop was harvested and the stubble was cleared. During preliminary examination, investigators found that the package bore the typical waterproof wrapping used in drone-dropped consignments, strongly indicating that it had been airdropped from across the border. Security agencies suspect that the heroin was sent from Pakistan as part of a continuing narco-terror strategy in which drones are used to push drugs and, at times, weapons into Jammu and Kashmir. Given the significance of the seizure, a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) was called to the site to collect samples and assist in the investigation. Police sources said intelligence agencies had recently alerted security forces about possible attempts to smuggle narcotics through drones along the International Border. Following these inputs, surveillance and search operations had been intensified in the Arnia-Bishnah belt, with local residents being sensitised to immediately report any suspicious objects or unusual activity. Investigators are now trying to determine when the drone crossed into Indian territory and whether local operatives were waiting to collect the consignment. Officials view the seizure as further evidence of persistent efforts by Pakistan-based smugglers and terror-linked networks to exploit drones for drug trafficking and destabilisation in Jammu and Kashmir. Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of law, and further investigation is underway. |
