| 65 vehicles seized in crackdown on illegal mining in Samba; Rs 4.27 lakh penalty imposed | | | Early Times Report SAMBA, May 20: Department of Geology and Mining Jammu and Kashmir intensified its drive against illegal mining in Samba district, seizing and compounding 65 vehicles during enforcement operations conducted in April and May, officials said on Wednesday. According to the department, penalties amounting to ?4.27 lakh were imposed on violators found involved in unauthorized extraction and transportation of mining material from different areas of the district, particularly along the Basantar River. Officials stated that surprise inspections and night-time raids were carried out in upper and downstream stretches of the river to check illegal mining activities. They added that mining operations are being permitted only in approved blocks allotted to authorised lease holders... District Mining Officer Kulwant Singh said strict monitoring was being undertaken across the district and action would continue against violators operating without valid permissions or tracking systems. "Vehicles found transporting mining material without proper documentation or in violation of norms are being seized and compounded on the spot," he said. The officer further said that nine mining leases are presently operational in the Basantar river belt and transportation of material is being monitored through mandatory tracking mechanisms. A multi-level task force comprising officials from different departments has also been constituted to curb illegal mining activities in the district. Police teams, along with mining officials, have been conducting naka checking and night patrols to intercept vehicles allegedly engaged in unlawful extraction and transportation of minerals. Singh warned that stringent legal action would be taken against anyone found involved in illegal mining or transportation outside the sanctioned areas. Officials reiterated that enforcement drives would continue in Samba district to ensure compliance with mining regulations and to prevent environmental degradation caused by unauthorized extraction activities. |
