Jammu, May 25: Outrage swept across Kashmir as anguished residents shouted “Hang the beast!” in protest against the brutal rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Budgam’s Galwanpora. Police on Monday announced they had cracked the case within 36 hours, arresting a local resident after what officials described as a confession backed by material evidence.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Budgam, K.K. Hari Prasad, said multiple suspects were detained during the probe before investigators zeroed in on one individual whose involvement matched forensic and circumstantial evidence.
“Within 36 hours we have solved the murder and rape case,” SSP Hari Prasad told reporters, identifying the accused as Mudasir Ahmad Mir, a resident of Galwanpora.
Police said Mir allegedly confessed during questioning, and incriminating evidence was recovered on his disclosure. The motive remains under investigation, with forensic procedures still underway.
The crime has triggered widespread grief and anger. The victim, missing since Saturday, was found dead in a field barely 200 metres from her home on Sunday morning. Her body bore signs of assault, including a fractured nose, deepening public outrage.
Political parties, religious groups, and civil society organizations condemned the heinous act, demanding swift justice.
PDP leader Iltija Mufti visited Galwanpora, joining grieving residents and urging police to deploy all resources. Addressing protesters, she thundered:
“Hang the beast who raped and murdered an innocent girl. Retrieve CCTV footage, nab him, jail him, and hang him.”
Hundreds of women, schoolchildren, and locals staged demonstrations, demanding exemplary punishment.
Budgam Police registered an FIR late Saturday night after receiving information about the girl’s disappearance. Extensive searches were launched, and her body was recovered early Sunday morning.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by DySP Headquarters Budgam Sajad Ahmad has been constituted. Tracker dogs, CCTV footage, and local suspects are being examined as part of the ongoing probe.
Authorities have urged the public and media not to disclose the victim’s identity, stressing that legal proceedings are underway and all angles are being investigated.
